I am thinking of the great Greek novelist, Vassilis Vassilikos, famous for "Z" and other works (have you seen the fabulous film version of "Z" by Costa-Gavras?), who said:
“Democracy is not self-evident, it is not something that we once won; we have to still fight for it.”
This is more relevant now than ever, with the wheels coming off the United States of America under Trump; with Biden unable to cross the finish line as his opponent; and the DNC still fighting Bernie Sanders—despite the fact that reality has caught up with him, and he is the best person to occupy the White House. Vassilis Vassilikos is still with us, and we ought to think about what we are willing to do to keep our democracy—or rather, wrest it back from the oligarchs and their lobbyists.
